Dealing with Difficult Behaviors from Seniors

a-1 home care

As caregivers, you may face a senior who is grateful for all the hard work and dedication that you put in to assist them, or it might be complete opposite where they act up (most likely caused by their health conditions) and make it even more difficult to do your job.  If that’s the scenario, here are some things to keep in mind as caregivers.

  • Don’t take it personally – seniors often get grumpy because their health is affecting them. Imagine the time you were sick, you might have wanted to curl up in bed and be left alone. So if a senior seem annoyed at times, it’s not because of you or your service.
  • Talk to the senior – If their behavior is to a point where it’s abusive, whether verbally or physically, talk to them about it and let them know how you feel.
  • Understand the problem – Some seniors refuse to shower or simply ignore their personal hygiene. Ask them questions about why they are not showering.  Maybe they are afraid of falling in the shower, then you can offer your assistance and assurance as a caregiver to eliminate the worries of falling.

Demand for in home caregivers continue to rise in recent years due to the rapid growth of the elderly population. Young and elderly female

Being a caregiver is a highly rewarding job, but it can also be a stressful job if you cannot manage your emotions well.  If the stress is becoming prolonged, the caregiver can become burned out.  Symptoms of a burnout include constant exhaustion, feeling unappreciated, and thinking that every day is a bad day.  These negative thoughts are not only affecting the quality of your caregiving work, but can have negative effects on your personal life as well.

The most important thing to do is the “Three R”, which is Recognize, Reverse, and Resilience.  The only way to overcome a problem is to recognize that there is a problem, so keep in mind and look for signs of burnout if you are feeling overwhelmed.  “Reverse” is to undo damange, whether it is by taking times off to relax or seek professional support.  Finally, “resilience” is what you will need to become stronger both mentally and physical to deal with stress and burnout.

Managing Elderly Insomnia for Caregivers

a-1 home care

When you are a caregiver that provides round the clock care, one of the issues you may have to deal with include helping an Elderly individual deal with Insomnia and sleep related issues.  Insomnia can be caused by a variety of factors included medication, anxiety/depression, chronic pain, and sedentary lifestyles that lack sufficient exercise.  So what have you done under circumstances where someone you are providing care for wakes up feeling agitated in the middle of the night?

After you’re sure that it wasn’t just a one night issue and that it is legitimately a problem that keeps happening, you need to find out what may be causing it.  If the issue is medication, perhaps a doctor visit and an alternative type of medication can alleviate the problem.  Lifestyle changes such as encouraging your loved one to read before bed instead of watching television, restricting caffeine, food, and drink consumption at hours close to bed time, and daily exercise may be effective solutions.  Check this article titled Insomnia: The Caregiver’s Role for more advice.  According to the article, sleep aids such as sleeping pills should be avoided because the body can eventually become resistant to them.

Helping with Elderly Holiday Blues

a-1 home care

The holiday season is almost over!  We just have New Year’s left, but if things went smoothly during Thanksgiving and Christmas time, congratulations.  The holiday season can be a very difficult time for Elderly individuals who have limited contact with family members.  The loneliness heightens especially if the Elder individual has lost a significant other or close friends in recent times.  They may spend too much time dwelling upon nostalgic memories of joyous Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas gatherings, and welcoming the New Year in good company.

As caregivers, it’s our duty during this time to understand what these Elderly people are going through and be able to prevent, recognize, and manage depression during the holidays.  This article titled Holiday Blues and the Elderly provides some background on why this time of the year is so difficult for some, provides some signs to look out for that may indicate your loved one is depressed, and ways to help them cope.  Try to get into contact with the nearest relatives and alert them of the situation.  If they live far, suggest a phone call to the Elderly individual to try and get them excited for participation in holiday activities.  This provides reassurance that they are loved and not forgotten.  While it’s just you and the Elderly individual, think of holiday activities that you can participate in such as shopping, window shopping, playing holiday games, watching holiday programs, etc.

Caregiver Employment Opportunities in Los Angeles County

There’s no such thing as a perfect caregiver.  That’s just the simple fact of it – we’re all humans and sometimes make mistakes.  Caregiving can sometimes be very difficult, especially if the person you’re providing care for has a disease such as Alzheimer’s or dementia.  Providing care for these individuals is probably one of the most challenging, since the disease affects the person’s ability to communicate with us and forgetfulness can be quite frustrating for the caregiver.

Family Caregiver Alliance has a helpful article called Ten Real-Life Strategies for Dementia Caregiving, which goes in depth about the different probelems that may arise when caring for someone with Alzheimer’s and offers suggestions on how to better handle each situation.  “Unfortunately, dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias is counter-intuitive; often the right thing to do is exactly opposite that which seems like the right thing to do.”

Another article on the Huffington Post by Kathryn Halanger titled New Strategies for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Help Family Caregivers, Too talks about how studies have shown that “…providing simple comforts to those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia such as encouaging patients to carry a doll, eating chocolate when it makes sense to them or creating familiar daily rituals like stocking and restocking a tackle box, engages and calms patients, and improves their erratic behavior,” Halanger says.  So finding out what the individual’s interests are by the questions they ask you and other interactions can help you create daily activities that may have some sort of connection to their past.

At A-1 Home Care, we’re always hiring experienced and compassionate Alzheimer’s Caregivers, nurse aides, and companions as well as caregivers who have experienced with other types of care including After Surgery Care, Arthritis Care, Parkinson Care, Diabetic Care, Cancer Care, Incontinence Care, and Hospice Care.  We have employment opportunities for caregivers who are available for 24 hour live-in care or hourly part-time care.  Our non-medical caregiver agency provides service all over Los Angeles County in cities such as Alhambra, Downey, Burbank, Glendora, Diamond Bar, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Torrance, Culver City, Brentwood, and others.

All of our caregivers must have prior experience, verifiable professional references, Tuberculosis testing, a National Background Check and DMV Check, Malpractice/Liability Insurance, First Aid/CPR training, and a personal interview with our office staff.  We have been in business since 1991, have an A+ Rating from the Better Business Bureau, Shield Accreditation, and are members of the National Care Planning Council.
