a-1 home care

And by “near perfect” we mean pretty darn good.  Of course, nobody is perfect, but there are those who have a natural knack for providing incredible at home caregiving service.  A-1 Home Care Jobs is always hiring compassionate, experienced, and qualified caregivers, nurse aides, companions, home helpers, babysitters, mother’s helpers, and nannies who love what they do.  At A-1 Home Care, we provide non-medical homecare services in Los Angeles County and Orange County.  We strive to hire the best caregivers, hiring those who have a good track record of caregiving experience.  When we interview caregivers, we can tell when an individual really takes pride in providing home care services based off of their general personality and the way in which they answer scenario-based questions of various care situations.  If you love providing in-home care for Elderly individuals or children and have the appropriate experience, we’d love to hear from you.

Check out this article titled Is There Such a Thing as a “Caregiving Instinct?” which talks about some qualities that excellent caregivers have.  “They’re mellow and good-humored, they always see the person behind the illness, they’re motivated by yesterday and today, not tomorrow, they’re patient, and they’re seemingly unflappable.”

A-1 Home Care specializes in Elder Care services such as After Surgery Care, Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care, Arthritis Care, Parkinson’s Care, Diabetic Care, Cancer Care, Hospice Care, Incontinence Care, and Post Stroke Care.  We also offer parenting services such as Child Care, Special Needs Care, and Postpartum Care.

All of our caregivers must have prior caregiving experience, verifiable professional references, a National Background Check/DMV Check, Tuberculosis testing, Malpractice/Liability insurance, First Aid/CPR training, and a personal interview with our office staff.

We serve the communities of Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Seal Beach, Garden Grove, Cerritos, La Mirada, Fullerton, Anaheim Hills, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, Tarzana, Burbank, Pasadena, Glendora, San Dimas, and others in Los Angeles County and Orange County.

Avoiding Caregiver Burnout

Image

Caregiver from A-1 Home Care Agency with elderly patient

Not just anyone can be a Caregiver, only special individuals have the patience and caring nature that allows them to put other people’s needs in front of their own.  Unlike typical 9 to 5 jobs, Caregivers are never really off the clock and don’t get steady breaks during their work days.  Only someone who has provided care to a senior, elderly or ill relative or client can understand just how challenging and demanding being a Care Provider is.

As a Caregiver, you deal with senior and elderly people who are not at their best.  They are usually ill, in pain, frustrated and feeling vulnerable.  The unfortunate part of being a Caregiver is that you are a handy target when they need to vent their anger and discomfort.  Having the person you’re caring for become verbally abusive is an upsetting experience and can lead to Caregiver Burnout.

The best way to avoid Caregiver Burnout is to remember several things:

  1. Don’t take it personally
    • If your patient becomes verbally abusive, curses or insults you, don’t take it personally.  Try to figure out what is making them so angry.  Are they in pain? Afraid? Has something stressed them out?  If you can understand the cause, you can fix it.  If they’re hurting or uncomfortable, repositioning, massaging or administering pain medication may be the solution.  If they are afraid or stressed, try to soothe or distract them from the source of their anxiety.

    2.  Don’t argue

  • Arguing or yelling at your client will not resolve anything and will most likely get you fired.

3.  Take a moment and breathe

  • Sometimes you need to take a moment and let everyone calm down.  Step into another room for a moment, take a breath and let the emotions settle.  When you feel calmer, go back to the patient and try again.  Remember, you are the professional CARE GIVER.  Your job is to make the patient’s life easier, not more stressful.

4.  Talk to the patient’s doctor

  • If you’re noticing a change in behavior, increased aggression or mood swings, there can be a medical reason.  These can be signs of Alzheimer’s or dementia or could be caused by medications.

5.  Take care of yourself

  • Taking care of yourself is one of the best gifts you can give to your patient.  By getting enough rest, enjoying time with your family and friends and recharging you’ll have the energy and patience needed to continue caring for your client.  It’s important to eat right, stay physically fit and remember to find joy in life.  How can you help the client stay healthy and well if you’re not in good shape yourself?

6.  You can’t control everything

  • You’re not superhuman and can’t control or fix everything.  Trying to be all-knowing and perfect is a horrible burden to place on yourself and won’t benefit your client.  Be warm, humble, cheerful, professional and caring.  Be willing to forgive and forget instead of holding grudges for bad days.

7.  Join a support group

  • The only people who will really understand what a Caregiver deals with on the job are other caregivers.  Join a caregiver support group and build healthy connections so you have a safe place to vent and get constructive advice for those difficult moments.

Helping with Elderly Holiday Blues

a-1 home care

The holiday season is almost over!  We just have New Year’s left, but if things went smoothly during Thanksgiving and Christmas time, congratulations.  The holiday season can be a very difficult time for Elderly individuals who have limited contact with family members.  The loneliness heightens especially if the Elder individual has lost a significant other or close friends in recent times.  They may spend too much time dwelling upon nostalgic memories of joyous Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas gatherings, and welcoming the New Year in good company.

As caregivers, it’s our duty during this time to understand what these Elderly people are going through and be able to prevent, recognize, and manage depression during the holidays.  This article titled Holiday Blues and the Elderly provides some background on why this time of the year is so difficult for some, provides some signs to look out for that may indicate your loved one is depressed, and ways to help them cope.  Try to get into contact with the nearest relatives and alert them of the situation.  If they live far, suggest a phone call to the Elderly individual to try and get them excited for participation in holiday activities.  This provides reassurance that they are loved and not forgotten.  While it’s just you and the Elderly individual, think of holiday activities that you can participate in such as shopping, window shopping, playing holiday games, watching holiday programs, etc.

A-1 Home Care Jobs always has employment opportunities for caregivers, nurse aides, and companions with prior experience in Orange County and Los Angeles County cities such as Los Angeles, Hollywood, Palos Verdes, Monrovia, Burbank, Tarzana, Covina, Diamond Bar, Anaheim Hills, Villa Park, Garden Grove, and Newport Beach.  Our caregivers must have prior experience, verifiable professional references, a National Background Check and DMV Check, Tuberculosis testing, Malpractice/Liability insurance, First Aid/CPR training, and a personal interview with our office staff.

Caregiver Tips for the Winter Season

The holidays are romantic, with sparkling lights and good cheer. But the colder temperatures can aggravate dormant colds, Arthritis pains and other senior health concerns. A-1 Home Care loves this  AARP article, “10 Home Health Remedies That Work“. We encourage our Home Health Providers, Nurse Aides and Caregivers to use these great tips in the upcoming months.

1. Honey. Did you know that one tablespoon of honey mixed with equal parts cinnamon can banish colds in just three days? We recommend using raw or local brands for older adults, but supermarket labels will do as well. Be mindful of elders with diabetes, who might not benefit from this easy remedy.

2. Ginger. This is an age old remedy for nausea or motion sickness that is backed by science. A wonderful solution for those long holiday flights and drives, or for chemo patients battling stomach upsets. AARP.org recommends taking one or two pieces of crystallized ginger to quell movement.

3. Tart Cherry Juice. Found easily in the supermarket, this juice is naturally anti-inflammatory making it perfect for Seniors struggling with gout, muscle soreness and Arthritis. One tablespoon of tart cherry juice concentrate taken twice a day can do wonders to reduce gout and arthritis attacks.

Caring for the Elderly During the Holidays

a-1 home care

For some Elderly individuals, the holiday season that includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s might not be as joyous a time as it is for others.  Especially for those who have limited contact with relatives or who have lost a friend or spouse, the holidays can be a time where feelings of sadness and depression are heightened.

As caregivers, we must understand this.  If you’re caring for an Elderly, Senior, or Terminally Ill individual this holiday season, you must be on the lookout for signs of depression.  This article titled Holiday Blues and the Elderly provides an insight into the root of Elderly depression during the holidays and some ways to alleviate it.  Be sure to stay in contact with family members.  The depression can be so serious, that you may have to contact the Elderly individual’s doctor to see what can be done.  It can be so minor that you just need to keep them occupied.  Participate in holiday activities with them, keep them up to date with family activities, encourage family members and children to visit more often, get out of the house more often and take the Elderly individuals to places where holiday spirits are high, and be sure to take of yourself as well!

At A-1 Home Care Jobs, we want to wish you a happy holiday season.  We are always hiring compassionate and experienced caregivers, nurse aides, and companions for in-home care in Orange County and Los Angeles County.  We are a non-medical homecare agency that has been in business since 1991.  We provide our clients with 24 hour live-in care or hourly part-time care services such as Alzheimer’s Care, After Surgery Care, Parkinson’s Care, Arthritis Care, Diabetic Care, Cancer Care, Incontinence Care, Hospice Care, and Post Stroke Care.

All of our caregivers must have prior experience, verifiable professional references, a National Background Check and DMV Check, Tuberculosis testing, Malpractice/Liability insurance, First Aid/CPR training, and a personal interview with our office staff.
