Communication is Key in Caregiving

A person may have the best of intention, yet sometimes they may make a mistake here and there that could lead to issues.  Whether doing a good job or making a mistake, criticisms and praises are commonly received by a caregiver.  That is why communication is key for a healthy relationship between the caregiver and the care receiver.  Here are a few tips on how to effectively communicate with the care recipients according to CaregiverSupport.org.  For example, breathing before starting a conversation can calm you down, especially if the discussion involves a sensitive topic.  Another good advice is is to ask questions.  Finding out another person’s thought process can really clear up a lot of uncertainty.  Listening is also a big part in communication, it allows you to better understand how the care recipient is responding to you.  Lastly, slow it down.  An even pace allow the communication to be clear, and allow adequate time for everyone to think and process a conversation, especially with seniors.

At A-1 Home Care, we are always looking for caregivers who are experienced, skilled, and are great in communication so they can best help our clients.  In addition, we are flexible in work scheduling, placing those in both live-in and live-out care situations while being relative close to their home.  Having clients in cities such as Santa Monica, Malibu, Westwood, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Studio City, Redond Beach, Century City, Palos Verdes, Calabasas, Encino, San Marino, Pasadena, Altadena, Arcadia, and others makes it easy to find an opportunity for our caregivers.  Furthermore, our 20 years of experience has given us the reputation for communities around Los Angeles and Orange County to turn to us first for their in home care services.  So don’t wait, join caregivers like Esther Barredo and Maria Carretero and become part of our team to help seniors and elderly.

How to Deal with Emotions as a Caregiver

a-1 home care caregivers

It is a huge responsibility when an individual decides to take on the role of being someone’s caregiver, and this can put much pressure on the caregiver if he/she does not cope with the fluctuating emotions that comes with the tasks.  For instance, taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s can be difficult and frustrating because of the communication issues, and such hurdle can often lead to anger at the patient, at yourself, or even the family members.  It is important to know that the emotions are natural, and that the Alzheimer’s patient is not being difficult on purpose.  Feeling overwhelmed is also a common emotion that many caregivers experience because caregiving takes an unexpected amount of time and effort.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help and relief if the tasks seem overwhelming, and good planning can also helps with easing a bit of pressure on the job.  Some caregivers might even feel guilty over their own ability and health conditions compared to the one they are caring for, or they feel inadequate for the job from their performance.  These are just a few example of emotions that caregivers feel, but just understand that you are not alone to tackle these challenges, and accept that the feelings are there instead of avoiding them can help you cope with the emotions surrounding a caregiver.

Managing Elderly Insomnia for Caregivers

a-1 home care

When you are a caregiver that provides round the clock care, one of the issues you may have to deal with include helping an Elderly individual deal with Insomnia and sleep related issues.  Insomnia can be caused by a variety of factors included medication, anxiety/depression, chronic pain, and sedentary lifestyles that lack sufficient exercise.  So what have you done under circumstances where someone you are providing care for wakes up feeling agitated in the middle of the night?

After you’re sure that it wasn’t just a one night issue and that it is legitimately a problem that keeps happening, you need to find out what may be causing it.  If the issue is medication, perhaps a doctor visit and an alternative type of medication can alleviate the problem.  Lifestyle changes such as encouraging your loved one to read before bed instead of watching television, restricting caffeine, food, and drink consumption at hours close to bed time, and daily exercise may be effective solutions.  Check this article titled Insomnia: The Caregiver’s Role for more advice.  According to the article, sleep aids such as sleeping pills should be avoided because the body can eventually become resistant to them.

Helping with Elderly Holiday Blues

a-1 home care

The holiday season is almost over!  We just have New Year’s left, but if things went smoothly during Thanksgiving and Christmas time, congratulations.  The holiday season can be a very difficult time for Elderly individuals who have limited contact with family members.  The loneliness heightens especially if the Elder individual has lost a significant other or close friends in recent times.  They may spend too much time dwelling upon nostalgic memories of joyous Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas gatherings, and welcoming the New Year in good company.

As caregivers, it’s our duty during this time to understand what these Elderly people are going through and be able to prevent, recognize, and manage depression during the holidays.  This article titled Holiday Blues and the Elderly provides some background on why this time of the year is so difficult for some, provides some signs to look out for that may indicate your loved one is depressed, and ways to help them cope.  Try to get into contact with the nearest relatives and alert them of the situation.  If they live far, suggest a phone call to the Elderly individual to try and get them excited for participation in holiday activities.  This provides reassurance that they are loved and not forgotten.  While it’s just you and the Elderly individual, think of holiday activities that you can participate in such as shopping, window shopping, playing holiday games, watching holiday programs, etc.
